curious of what lays behind their eyes, where they have been and where they hope to go. My photography evokes the passage of time. I use slow shutter speeds and double exposures to explore the nuances of movement and the modulation of time as it passes from past to present to future. Recently I have begun to work with landscapes, attempting to illustrate abstract, evocative scenery as a motif to epitomize the idea of imagined space, a reminder that what I create through the viewfinder is only real to me.I am inspired to compose by the contrast of light and dark, while I use the changing light of day to arouse the mood of my dreams.  Strangely, color has appeared in my work, slowly and without intention, concealing the black and white imagery of my past. This color conjures images of my favorite foods – mangoes, chocolate and spicy masala chai, and surprises me.  Gone with the black and white is my concerned with documenting a story, rather I find myself interested in the results of immersing myself in the story and recording my own reactions and actions to my world.  The photographs of Faces and Places come from that immersion.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For me, photography is a means of self-expression – I make pictures for myself, to identify with hidden qualities of my character, to better understand my reality, and to express my interpretation of the world around me. A clearer understanding of myself and of my world allow me to explore parts of my life of life as an abstract form, and also to interact with people I would otherwise not be able to engage with. My goal is to use my camera like Alice’s rabbit hole, to open an unexplored world, a place of curious self-expression, but also a world of new relationships, new chances new beginnings and most importantly new stories.

My choice of subject comes from a place of intuition and is fueled by an impetuous desire to partake in the stories that unfold around me. I seek the unknown and I look for the light within the shadows, the stories that are not at first obvious and the uncommon in the common. I photograph people in their environments because I am

TESTIMONIALS

Cassandra Sohn - Owner/Gallerist at Sohn Fine Art Gallery in Lenox, Massachusetts wrote:

Denise B. Chandler's growth as a fine art photographer has been truly remarkable.  In 2009, I started to mentor Chandler with photography lessons teaching her the basics.  From our first lesson, I could tell how determined and passionate she was to soak up every little detail.  After working with her for years, and with her never satisfied attitude and continued passion, when an opportunity presented itself to her to participate in a summer residency photography program, I encouraged her to go and learn from the masters.  Since then she has studied with the best of the best, Jay Maisel, Arthur Meyerson, John Paul Caponigro, Seth Resnick, Greg Gorman, Michael Wilson, David Turner, Andrea Modica, and several more.  Over the years, her photograwphs have evolved into striking, cohesive, strong bodies of work.  Chandler's gumption is something to be envied.  She is never content with staying stagnant - Chandler is always propelling foreward driven by her obsession for creating new and inventive work.  My mentorship never ceased and now we have more of a partnership as I now represent her at my gallery, Sohn Fine Art.

Dr. Philip Pryma - Curator and Owner of St. Francis Gallery in Lee, Massachusetts wrote:

Denise B. Chandler is an alive, passionate, energetic photographer who doesn't follow the rules. Her excitement and discovery begins with the small details we often overlook to the varied and marvelous patterns in our everyday world that are not noticed.  She "instructs" us how to see...color, shape, form...using her camera to expose the beauty that she envisions so that we can see more...and never in the same way again.  Shimmering and static patterns, colors, the air swollen with mysterious shapes and movement, all are captured in an extraordinary composition.  These silouettes of the "familiar" become fantastic abstracts exquistely printed and framed as beaufiful reminders and works of art.

John Clarke - Gallery Representative at Sohn Fine Art Gallery in Lenox, Massachusetts wrote:

Denise B. Chandler is on a mission.  Nothing is safe from her lens.  She shoots with a voracious appetite, and has been for several years.  Her interests are widespread, and she continues to use the world at large as her palette as she refines her vision as a fine art photographer.  From scenes of industrial decay to the glint in a horse's eye, Denise is looking, trying to capture and share the incredible beauty and diversity this life has to offer.

Jenna Gazaille - Gallery Representative at Sohn Fine Art Gallery in Lenox, Massachusetts wrote:

Denise B Chandler is the true meaning of a photographer. She is always exploring, trying to find the next innovation and never satisfied with having her camera stationery. Her passion for photography is something that I truly envy. Denise B Chandler has moxie, which comes through in her photographs with her explosive colors and the expressive gestures. Keep your eyes peeled because her photographs will take you by surprise!
